What is your business?
JKS + Company:
Husband and Wife, Design/Build Team.
Indoor and Outdoor Dream Living Spaces.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing at the beginning of your journey, what would it be?
To keep going even when it feels like you don’t know what you’re doing and to not be afraid of what you don’t know. Keep applying yourself and you’ll learn along the way! Everybody has to start somewhere. Even Martha Stewart had to bake her first pie.

How do you stay creative while managing a business?
Being surrounded by our children really helps, they are creative machines, (and have the daily mess to prove it)! They don’t care what people think about their creations, they just create whatever they want with no shame or longing for approval attached to it. Creative and Free. Our business is essentially creating something out of nothing so being creative is part of our every day investment.

What is the hardest part about being an entrepreneur?
I think it’s the fact that we are married entrepreneur’s. It takes intentional effort to focus on what really matters at the end of day, the fact that we’re husband and wife and have this beautiful family surrounding us! Lovers first, business owners second.

What is your favorite quote (ever), and why?
Passion is not so much an emotion, as a destiny. What choice do I have in the face of this wind but to put up my sail and rest my oars?” – Jeanette Winterson. This quote hung on my bedroom wall for years and still resides inside my heart. Before we were married I trusted that Peace and Rest would guide me to the man I was to commit my life to. And now as parent’s and business owners we know that “resting our oars” is the answer to TRUE success, which has nothing to do with the bottom line, and everything to do with peace of mind. The wind will blow where it will and if we’re willing to wait and not row ourselves to death, direction will catch our sail!

When you are in a rut, where is your favorite place to go for inspiration?
Offline. Get outside, walk barefoot, take a dip in the pool, swing on the tree swing, plant a flower, sit on the dock, lay on a blanket and watch the clouds go by. Stop all the creating and just BE. Listen to your breath, your strong heart beat! You’re ALIVE! It’s miraculous!

Tell us your five favorite things:
Any type of international food, our favorite is a local Himalayan Restaurant. We are beach bums whenever we get the chance, salty sea breeze; nothing like it! We met in Florida so we have a special affection for sun and sand! Some of our favorite people are our 4 Dinner Club couples. We’ve been getting together once a month for over 6 years! Lots of life lived elbow to elbow over bottles of wine. We’re all small business owners too so there’s never any shortage of conversation, insight, sharing or encouraging!

If you could say one thing to an entrepreneur who is struggling to find their way, what would it be?
You don’t have to be amazing today, just don’t give up and maybe you’ll be amazing tomorrow!

We were both born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jake has been in the home building and remodeling business since a young age. (So young in fact that at the age of 17 he built his Mother her first custom home)! He’s worked for several local companies over the years, partnered with and owned a landscaping company for 12 years before we branched out and started JKS & CO. Janelle has always had an appreciation for all things home and is a self-taught Designer and Interior Stylist. Being raised in a large family, (the youngest of 8) taught her how to keep a home functional and beautiful while still maintaining a sense of heritage.

Married for almost 14 years and have 4 children, ages 11, 9, 7 and 3 and a baby on the way (due 1/2017). We love to be at home and work on projects around our house, entertain friends and family and teach our children what real TV is all about, (think Knight Rider, A-team, MacGyver, Gilligan’s Island; you know REAL television).
